About Yala

Yala National Park is Sri Lanka's most visited and second largest national park, covering over 97,000 hectares of diverse ecosystems along the southern coast. It is globally renowned as the location with the highest leopard density in the world — making it one of the best places on earth to spot these elusive big cats in the wild.

Beyond leopards, Yala is home to large herds of elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, water buffalo, jackals and an extraordinary variety of birdlife including the endemic Sri Lanka junglefowl. The park's landscape combines open grasslands, dense jungle, rocky outcrops and coastal lagoons.

Safari jeeps depart twice daily — at dawn and late afternoon — to maximise wildlife sightings during the animals' most active hours. Experienced local trackers guide visitors through the park's five blocks, with Block 1 offering the best leopard sighting opportunities.
