Southern Province 100 km from Colombo Best: November to April Surfing, Snorkelling, Beach Life

About Hikkaduwa

Hikkaduwa is Sri Lanka's most famous beach town — a vibrant stretch of coastline 100 km south of Colombo that has been attracting visitors for decades. The town's lively beach road is lined with restaurants, surf shops and guesthouses, creating a relaxed and social atmosphere unlike the more secluded resort beaches further south.

The Hikkaduwa Coral Sanctuary protects a shallow reef system just offshore, teeming with colourful fish, sea turtles and coral formations. Snorkelling and glass-bottom boat rides over the reef are among the most popular activities, accessible directly from the main beach.

Hikkaduwa is also Sri Lanka's premier surf destination, with consistent beach and reef breaks suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers. The main surf season runs from November to April.

Key Attractions

Coral Sanctuary

Snorkel the protected reef with sea turtles and tropical fish right off the beach.

Surfing

Consistent beach and reef breaks for all levels — board and lesson hire available.

Glass Bottom Boats

See the reef without getting wet on a classic glass-bottom boat tour.

Beach Life

Lively beach atmosphere with restaurants, bars and sunset spots along the shore.

Scuba Diving

Wreck dives and reef dives available for certified divers.

Galle Fort

The UNESCO-listed colonial fort is just 20 minutes south — a perfect half-day trip.

Getting There

Hikkaduwa is 100 km south of Colombo — approximately 2 hours by road or a scenic 2.5-hour coastal train journey from Colombo Fort. The train is the most enjoyable option, with the tracks running right along the beachfront for much of the southern route.

Local Tips

  • Swim only in designated safe swimming areas — currents can be strong near the reef
  • The coral is protected — do not touch or stand on it when snorkelling
  • Surfing lessons are affordable and widely available on the main beach
  • Avoid visiting May–October when the southwest monsoon brings rough seas
  • Galle Fort makes an excellent half-day trip — combine it with a beach day
