About Sigiriya

Sigiriya — often called the Eighth Wonder of the World — is an ancient rock fortress rising dramatically 200 metres above the surrounding jungle plains of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle. Built in the 5th century AD by King Kashyapa, the site features the ruins of an upper palace perched on the flat summit, along with elaborate water gardens, frescoes and the iconic Lion Gate.

The site was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 and remains one of the best-preserved examples of ancient urban planning in Asia. The famous frescoes, painted into a sheltered gallery halfway up the rock, depict celestial maidens in vivid natural pigments that have survived over 1,500 years.

Visitors climb via a series of iron staircases past the Mirror Wall — once so highly polished it reflected the king's image — before reaching the summit where palace foundations and sweeping panoramic views over the jungle canopy await.
