About Nuwara Eliya
Perched at 1,868 metres above sea level in Sri Lanka's central highlands, Nuwara Eliya is unlike anywhere else on the island. Getting There
Nuwara Eliya is 180 km from Colombo, approximately 5 hours by road. The most scenic option is the train from Colombo Fort or Kandy — the Kandy to Nanu Oya route (nearest station) is especially spectacular. From Nanu Oya station, taxis are available to the town centre.
Local Tips
- Pack warm layers — temperatures drop significantly at night even in dry season
- The strawberry season (March–April) is a lovely time to visit local farms
- Book train tickets in advance, especially observation car seats
- Avoid the monsoon months (May–September) when mist can obscure the views
- The town gets very busy during Sinhala and Tamil New Year in April
