About Unawatuna

Unawatuna is widely regarded as one of Sri Lanka's most beautiful and swimmable beaches. Its sheltered crescent bay — protected from the open ocean by a shallow coral reef — creates naturally calm, clear waters ideal for swimming and snorkelling year-round during the dry season.

The beach has a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere. Small guesthouses, boutique hotels and beachside restaurants line the curved shore, while the pace of life remains pleasantly unhurried compared to busier resort towns. Yoga retreats, diving schools and massage parlours add to the wellness vibe.

Unawatuna is just 5 km from Galle Fort — the magnificent UNESCO-listed Dutch colonial fortification that is one of Sri Lanka's most rewarding historical sites. The combination of beach relaxation and cultural exploration makes Unawatuna an outstanding base for the south.

Local Tips

  • The bay is protected but always check local conditions before diving or snorkelling
  • Visit Galle Fort in the late afternoon for golden hour light and cooler temperatures
  • Book accommodation early in peak season (December–January)
  • Haggle politely for tuk-tuk fares — agree a price before getting in
  • Watch the sunset from Japanese Peace Pagoda on the hill above the beach
