About Sinharaja

Sinharaja Forest Reserve is Sri Lanka's last viable area of primary tropical rainforest and one of the island's most precious natural treasures. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, this ancient forest covers approximately 11,187 hectares and contains an extraordinary concentration of endemic species found nowhere else on earth.

The forest is particularly renowned among birdwatchers — of Sri Lanka's 26 endemic bird species, an incredible 21 can be found within Sinharaja. The purple-faced langur, giant squirrel, leopard and dozens of endemic reptiles and amphibians also call the forest home.

Guided forest treks through Sinharaja are an immersive, otherworldly experience. The dense forest canopy creates a green cathedral of light, sound and life — with the constant calls of endemic birds, the rustle of endemic lizards and the rich smell of ancient forest floor.

Local Tips

  • Always use a registered local guide — it is mandatory and dramatically improves sightings
  • Wear long trousers and apply leech repellent — leeches are common after rain
  • The forest is best early morning when birds are most active
  • Bring waterproof protection for your camera and bag — it rains frequently
  • Go slowly and quietly — the forest rewards patience and stillness
