About Polonnaruwa

Polonnaruwa was the second ancient capital of Sri Lanka, declared so by King Vijayabahu I after his decisive victory over the Chola invaders in 1070 CE. The ancient city reached its greatest glory under King Parakramabahu I in the 12th century, whose ambitious building programme created an extraordinary collection of temples, palaces, irrigation systems and Buddha statues that survive to this day.

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa is remarkably well preserved. The famous Gal Vihara — four colossal Buddha figures carved directly into a granite face — is one of the most awe-inspiring sights in all of Sri Lanka.

The site is best explored by bicycle — the ruins are spread across a large area connected by flat paths through parkland, making cycling an enjoyable and practical way to cover the whole complex in a single day.
